In their article, Sharon Parker and Caroline Knight present their SMART Work Design model as below, which aims to enhance worker wellbeing and performance. The authors outline the five key characteristics of the model and stress that the first step in improving work design is data collection: “The first step in improving work design is to assess its current state through employee surveys, interviews, and observations. The most thorough assessment would include all three.” They then offer guidance on five ways to apply the model to foster positive collaboration between managers and their teams: (1) Redesigning team workflows, (2) Aligning people management systems, (3) Building leadership capabilities for SMART work design, (4) Guiding and evaluating operational changes, and (5) Encouraging and supporting employee job crafting.
